The immune system is an important regulator in the homeostatic mechanisms of the body, particularly during the stressful situations and ageing. The drugs acting on the immune system, i.e. immunomodulators are likely to influence many systems in the body. Many plants with potential immunomodulatory activity are reported. Carica papaya Linn commonly known as Pappita or Papaya is reported to possess anti-inflammatory, wound healing, anti-hepatotoxic, diuretic, and antihypertensive effect. It has been reported that Carica papaya is used in the treatment of Dengue infection. Hence, the present investigation was aimed to study the immunomodulatory activity of aqueous extract of leaves of Carica papaya Linn in order to justify the traditional claims using neutrophil adhesion test. In the present study, CPME and CPFE when orally administered, significantly increased the adhesion of neutrophils to nylon fibers which correlates to the process of margination of cells in blood vessels. The present investigation therefore reveals that CPME and CPFE certainly possess immunomodulatory property; however, further studies are warranted to elucidate the exact mechanism of action.
